FAQs

Questions, answered plainly.

The short version of how visits, costs and the refund work. The full detail is in the membership terms.

Visits & the waiting period

When can I use my included visits?

New members have a 3-month waiting period before ordinary included visits become available. Continuous renewals do not have another waiting period, provided membership remains continuous and the account is up to date.

How long is an included visit?

Each included visit covers up to one hour of labour. Additional labour is charged at R450 per additional hour.

Can I use two visits in a month?

Premium members may use up to 2 visits per calendar month. Basic, Standard and Plus members may use one visit per calendar month. All plans remain subject to their total membership-period allowance.

Do unused visits carry over?

No. Unused visits do not automatically carry over into the next membership period.

Is my visit confirmed as soon as I request it?

No. A request is only confirmed once we've checked your remaining allowance, whether the job is eligible, and contractor availability.

Costs

Are materials included?

No. Materials, parts and replacement items are charged separately. We'll give you a quotation or estimate and ask for your approval before buying, where reasonably possible.

What if a job takes longer than an hour?

Labour beyond the included hour is R450 per additional hour. We'll tell you about the extra cost and ask you to approve it before work proceeds, where reasonably possible.

How much are emergency services?

An emergency call-out during normal business hours is R400. After-hours emergency work is R500 per hour. Emergency services are charged separately and can be requested during the waiting period. More about emergency services.

The 35% refund

Can I get money back if I do not use my plan?

If you complete the full 12-month membership period without using any included maintenance visits, Maintara will refund 35% of the membership fees you paid for that period. Using one or more included visits means this specific refund does not apply.

What does the refund cover?

Membership fees actually paid only. Emergency call-out fees, additional labour, materials and other separately charged services aren't included. See refund amounts per plan.

When is the refund paid?

Within a reasonable period after the end of the membership period, once your account and payment history have been verified.

Is the waiting period part of the 12-month membership period?

Yes. The 12-month membership period starts on your membership start date, and for new members the first 3 months are the waiting period. Your dates are recorded on your Membership Service Schedule when your membership is confirmed.

Renewals, cancellations & cover

What happens when I renew?

Continuous renewals don't have another waiting period, provided membership remains continuous and your account is up to date. Unused visits from the previous period don't carry over.

How long is the membership, and can I cancel?

Memberships run for 12 months. You keep any cancellation rights you have under the Consumer Protection Act, and any cancellation fee must be lawful and reasonable. Read the cancellation terms.

Does Maintara cover property damage?

No. Maintara is a maintenance membership, not insurance. The cost of repairing or replacing damage from events like storms, flooding, fire, theft, accidents or vandalism is not automatically covered. Appliances, furniture and personal belongings aren't covered either. Full list of exclusions.

What about problems that existed before I joined?

Defects or damage that existed before your membership began aren't automatically covered. That's why we record your property's condition with photos when you join. We can quote separately to fix pre-existing problems.

Can I give my visits to someone else?

No. Included visits can't be transferred to another person, converted into cash or exchanged for unrelated services.

What kind of work is excluded?

Major construction, structural repairs, specialist jobs and work outside a contractor's qualifications may be excluded from the included allowance and quoted separately. See what's in scope.

Who does the work?

Maintara coordinates work through its own staff and/or approved contractors, subject to availability. Regulated work, like electrical work, is done only by suitably qualified and authorised people.
